The Fates (the moirai) were the goddesses of fate that created the un-escapable destiny of man. They gave every person their fate in the plan of things. Moiragetes, the god of fate, was their leader.


Klotho (Spinner) spun the thread of life.(carries the book of ate)


Lakhesis (separated of Lots) being taken from a word meaning to receive, measured the thread of life. (Carries a staff)

Atropos (She who cannot be turned) cut the thread of life.(carries a scroll, a wax tablet, and a pair of cutting scissors)


Since the start of mankind the fates have spun, measured, and cut the life of the humans. Klotho spun the thread meaning giving life to a person.
Lakhesis measured the thread in other words choosing the length of the person’s life.
Atropos cut the thread at the end of a person’s life.



The fates themselves could not interfere in the choices a human made. the fates were sometimes described as ugly old women.
