The Fates (the moirai) were the goddesses of fate that created the un-escapable destiny of man. They gave every person their fate in the plan of things. Moiragetes, the god of fate, was their leader.

Lakhesis (separated of Lots) being taken from a word meaning to receive, measured the thread of life. (Carries a staff)

Atropos (She who cannot be turned) cut the thread of life.(carries a scroll, a wax tablet, and a pair of cutting scissors)

Since the start of mankind the fates have spun, measured, and cut the life of the humans. Klotho spun the thread meaning giving life to a person.
Lakhesis measured the thread in other words choosing the length of the person’s life.
Atropos cut the thread at the end of a person’s life.

The fates themselves could not interfere in the choices a human made. the fates were sometimes described as ugly old women.
