Bellerphon was a citizen of Cornith. He was exiled(banished from his or her native land). In those days you could be purified of the gult of such a crime. The kings wife, Stheneboen, made a pass at the young hero. When Bellerophon repulsed her advances, she told her husband it was bellerophon who made a pass at HER.

The Letter

King Proetus cloaked his indignation, not wishing to violate the sacred obligations of hospitality by doing harm to his guest, so he contrived his revenge by asking Bellerophon to deliver a letter on his behalf to King Iobates of Lycia, his father-in-law. This is somewhat suprising since wrighting has not been invented yet.
