Apollo, son of Zeus and Leto, is the god of prophecy, oracles, healing, plague, disease, music, song, poetry, archery, and the protection of the young. He is the twin sister to Artemis, goddess of the hunt and wild things.
Apollo was born on the island of Delos after Hera, Zeus’s wife, convinced the earth to refuse to allow Leto, Apollo's mother, to give birth anywhere on its surface. Except Delos was said to be a floating island and was not considered in Hera's prohibitions. As a gesture of thanks Delos was secured to the sea bed by four columns to give it stability , and from then on it became one of the most important sanctuaries to Apollo.
"When Apollo grew, he had many love affairs, but the one that was well known was his affair with Daphne, the river nymph. Apollo always teased Eros (Cupid), so Eros punished Apollo by hitting Daphne with an arrow of disgust and repulsion. On the other hand, he hit Apollo with an arrow filled with love for Daphne. Apollo chased Daphne across the face of the earth, until Daphne, exhausted, cried out to Mother Earth. She agreed to help Daphne, and she turned her into a birch tree. Apollo went away feeling rejected."- http://www.ballpoint.org/greekgods/apollo.htm
